Every adoptee, at one point or another, feels a twinge in their heart. Mostly this feeling arises at the time of making a family tree. It might be because sometimes the person does not understand if they have to draw their adopted family tree or the family tree of their actual birth family. Mostly, they do not understand how to handle the differentiation in both families. Others, who do not have any information regarding their families might feel lonely and haunted as their family tree will remain empty.

Some people say that the family tree needs to be according to the genes. But, the primary purpose of the family tree is to represent your immediate family, be it adopted or otherwise. In the case of adoption, the love between the adoptee and adopters matters the most.

Tracing the family tree of the adoptive parents is almost the same as you will trace the family tree of your birth family. The only difference between them is that in the adopted family tree, you have to mention that your link to the particular family is through adoption. In no way should you think that this lessens or shrinks the family bond and love that you might feel for your adoptive parents. The only reason for mentioning that the family tree traces a family that adopted you is to make it clear for the person who sees the family tree.

Tracing the family tree of the birth family

You may or may not have the details of the names, and relations, that you bore with your birth family. If you have all the names you require, making a family tree will be similar to the methods used for all other similar family history listings. In case you do not have these details, you will need to ask your adoptive parents, consult the adopting home you were adopted from, etc. and hence make your family tree.

Tracing the family tree of both families

If you are thinking of making an adopted family tree, along with the family tree of your birth family, it is a sound choice, too. Making a family tree of joined families can be a bit tricky. As most conventional family tree designs do not accommodate two family histories, you will need to work on a design yourself and find what suits your preference. Making a family tree of two families can be easily done by drawing lines in different colors and mentioning which color refers to which family.
