Desserting 101: How to Slay Homemade Chocolate Chips

Everybody can appreciate a delicious dessert. They’re convenient, typically easy to make, and they are amazing from a store or homemade (preferably homemade). Nothing wraps up a great meal like a brownie or a chocolate chip cookie. To make either recipe, you need chocolate chips. Yeah, you can buy some semi-sweet chips from the grocery store, but making them allows you to control the amount of added sugar. Plus, store-bought chips might have preservatives or other additives that can trigger an allergy.

Chocolate chips may appear to be overwhelming to make from scratch, but they are actually really easy for any skill level. To make chocolate chips, take your favorite baking chocolate and melt it down. Be sure to use a double boiler to avoid burning your chocolate. When the melting process is almost complete, add two to three tablespoons of honey, depending on how sweet you want your chocolate chips. This is also a great time to add a teaspoon of vanilla before further mixing the ingredients.

Once your ingredients are cooled down enough, you’re going to put the chocolate into a pastry bag to form your chips. To start, push a coupler into the empty pastry bag. Cut a hole big enough for the tip to add the nozzle. Form a seal after twisting the coupler into the bag. Once secure, add the bag into a drinking glass. Make sure the bag goes around the ends of the cup. Add the chocolate mixture to the bag and twist the end to close it.

If you do not have a pastry bag lying around, you can create one using a freezer bag. The chips won’t look as pretty, but they will still taste great. Simply fill the freezer bag by packing the chocolate into the bag with as little air as possible. Cut a hole at the end of the bag big enough to pipe the chips onto parchment paper. Place into the freezer until solid. If you prefer chunks, you can ditch the bag altogether, scoop the chocolate onto parchment paper, and once the chocolate bar is firm, break them into pieces.

Whatever you decide to use the chocolate chips for, it is great knowing these chips are a healthy alternative to store-bought chips. You can also make as many or as little chips as you want. This is also a great recipe to make with kids because it requires very little heating.
