Mountain biking involves riding a bicycle through difficult terrain such as on hiking trails or through wooded areas and mountains. There are many types of mountain biking as well including downhill mountain biking and trail mountain biking. It is important that everyone feels comfortable mountain biking before beginning. Follow the tips below to make mountain biking with your family go as smoothly as possible.

1. Practice Patience

If you have young children especially, or other individuals who are just starting in the sport of mountain biking, practice patience. The sport can be very overwhelming for those who are young or who are just starting out practicing the hobby. Make sure that those who are inexperienced are utilizing the correct gear so they feel the most comfortable and safe.

It is also important to plan a system ahead of time for where you are going and what route you are taking. This will ensure safety for all and will ensure everyone sticks together. Make sure instructions are easily understood and that you are able to stop and explain when necessary.

2. Pack the Necessities

When taking your family mountain biking with you, it is important to bring the necessities. Make sure you have emergency supplies such as first aid kits on hand as well as food and water for hydration. Make sure that there is at least a liter of water for every person on the journey.

It is also important to make sure that all safety equipment is present. Make sure everyone has a helmet and is wearing the appropriate clothing for falls or injuries. Make sure the entire mountain biking experience is truly enjoyable for all.

3. Practice Before Going

It is important to practice mountain biking with beginners or children in your family before actually setting out on a mountain biking adventure. Allow these inexperienced bikers to practice skills that are necessary when actually going mountain biking, one at a time. Utilize areas to train that are not heavily rough or mountainous to start.

Make sure everyone understands how to switch gears and brake to start as these are the epitomes of mountain bike safety. From there, teach beginners how to balance on their bikes to ensure safety over rough terrain. Make sure you communicate instructions clearly to the individuals you are training. Make sure individuals are comfortable enough communicating where there are still questions about certain skills as well as it is only through practice that beginners will feel comfortable with the whole mountain biking experience.

Final Thoughts

Mountain biking can be an exciting adventure for families of all sizes and ages to enjoy together. Make sure safety is of a top priority by practicing before the adventure and having all of the essentials in place. Be patient when on your next mountain biking expedition, and ensure that everyone has a great time with it.
