As a new mom, you’ve got a lot to look forward to over the next several months. Between poking back at those baby kicks and picking out a layette, you’ve got plenty of chances to be involved in your baby’s development. While you might already be feeling that mother-baby bond, new dads sometimes need a little help figuring out exactly where they belong in their new family arrangement. Fortunately, the nursery prep is one area where dads can easily dip their toes into this new parenting adventure, and these are all great things that your partner can do to be involved in the pregnancy.
Help pick out the theme
From zoo animals to floral prints, there are tons of options to choose from for decorating your baby’s nursery. With so many choices, it is easy for you to get bogged down by questions such as whether you want to go with robin’s egg blue or deep sea chartreuse for the trim in your baby’s nursery. This is one great place where dad can be the final decision maker. Fill him in on a few of your ideas, and see where his imagination takes your project.
Develop a plan
New dads are great at being able to think about every detail that their baby needs to be safe and grow. Ask your partner to check out the baby’s future bedroom to find out if you need to do things such as change out the flooring. For instance, old, dirty carpeting may need to be replaced. Hardwood floors with rugs are a great middle ground that are easy to clean yet give your baby a soft space to play.
Gather the supplies
When it comes to lugging around heavy paint cans, this is definitely the time when Dad can step in. While you might want to tag along to help pick out the materials and colors, your partner will feel proud to be able to help out with this important part of setting up the nursery. If he’s particularly handy, then he may even want to tackle a DIY project such as building shelves for all of those adorable toys and storybooks.
Assemble the furniture
There is something primal about putting together a crib that turns a man into a dad. While your partner might not be the type to hand carve a bassinet out of wood, he can definitely get into helping with the assembly. Hand him an electric screwdriver and offer to help hold the pieces in place. He’ll love being able to contribute, and you’ll both have a chance to bond as a growing family.
While you are setting up the nursery, remember to have your baby’s dad help with the final touches as well. Get him involved in helping to hang the pictures, fold the baby clothes and even add those cute little sheets to the crib. Then, take a family selfie to share with the rest of your family. Giving your baby’s dad a chance to relish in the joy of becoming a parent helps him to begin feeling that special bond of having a family.
